Katelyn returns to BFAS with her stellar performances and warm personality.
THE ARTIST
Organist, lecturer, and pedagogue Katelyn Emerson, hailed as “one of her generation’s most prominent organists” (Portland Press Herald) and “the perfect interpreter” (Glasgow Times), is internationally renowned for performances of repertoire from the 14th—21st centuries that are “thrilling from beginning to end.” (Cleveland Classical)
Praised for “versatility and virtuosity” (RITMO) and “elegant, sublime music-making” (Heuberger Bote), Katelyn Emerson performs throughout North America, Europe, and Asia in concerts that are “thrilling from beginning to end”, showcasing repertoire from the 14th—21st centuries with “impressive technical facility and musicianship” (Cleveland Classical). Recent and upcoming appearances include Musiikkitalo (Helsinki, Finland), Walt Disney Hall (Los Angeles), Kurhaus Wiesbaden (Germany), Hallgrímskirkja (Reykjavik, Iceland), Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Uppsala domkyrka (Sweden), Longwood Gardens (Pennsylvania), West Point Cadet Chapel (New York), Auditorio Nacional de Música (Madrid, Spain), Freiburger Münster (Germany), Haderslev Domkirke (Denmark), L’Oratoire Saint-Joseph (Montreal, Canada), among others.
Katelyn is a prizewinner of organ competitions on three continents, including the American Guild of Organists’ (AGO) National Young Artists Organ Competition, Musashino International Organ Competition (Japan), Concours “Pierre de Manchicourt” (France), and Mikael Tariverdiev International Organ Competition (Russia). She was featured in The Diapason magazine’s inaugural “20 Under 30 Class of 2015” alongside exceptional colleagues nominated for “superior accomplishments, leadership, creativity, and innovative thinking.”
In addition to teaching privately and coaching students for international playing competitions and exams, Katelyn lectures and presents both masterclasses and workshops on topics ranging from organ interpretation, injury prevention, and healthy playing techniques to performance studies and empirical music analysis. She regularly serves on faculties of organ academies that include the St Andrews Organ Academy (Scotland), McGill Student Organ Academy (Montreal, Canada), and AGO-sponsored Pipe Organ Encounters, and adjudicates international competitions, most recently the 2025 Concours International pour Orgue de Saint-Maurice (Switzerland) and the 2024 IAO-RCO Organ Playing Competition (York, England).
She also volunteers with charity organizations such as Scotland’s Sowne of Organe to increase public awareness of the cultural and technological significance of extant historic organs. Her two CD recordings appear on the Pro Organo label.
Between travels for performances, Katelyn is based in both the USA and the UK as she pursues a PhD at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Music and Science, with her interdisciplinary, mixed-methods research into musicians’ backgrounds and unique interpretations funded by the Economic and Social Research Council/UK Research and Innovation. Recipient of both a J. William Fulbright Study/Research Grant and a German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD), Katelyn studied en perfectionnement at the Conservatoire de Toulouse (France) and holds degrees from the Musikhochschule Stuttgart (MA Orgel, Germany), University of Cambridge (MPhil in Music), Colorado State University (Certificate in Advanced Occupational Ergonomics), and Oberlin College & Conservatory (BM organ/BA French). http://www.katelynemerson.com
