THE ARTISTS

Soweto Gospel Choir was formed in 2002 to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African Gospel music. The choir draws on the best talent from the many churches in and around Soweto, South Africa’s famous township, mixing earthy rhythms with rich harmonies to uplift the soul and express the energy of their homeland. By blending elements of African gospel, traditional spirituals, and American popular music, the choir shares the joy of faith through music with audiences around the world.

Hailing from the town of Soweto (South West Township), the birthplace of South Africa’s democratic movement’s struggle for freedom, Soweto Gospel Choir has thrilled audiences around the world with their stunning blend of African gospel, freedom songs and international classics. Combining earthy rhythms and rich harmonies and sung in 6 of South Africa’s 11 official languages, the choir is the winner of three GRAMMY Awards among many other international accolades.

Soweto Gospel Choir first performed at a historic 2003 concert for international hero and human rights activist Nelson Mandela; the group’s 2018 album Freedom is a heartfelt tribute to Mandela, honoring the one-hundredth anniversary of his birth. They performed this tribute live on Beaches Fine Arts Series in 2018. Their albums Blessed and African Spirit won the GRAMMY Award for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2007 and 2008. They have toured the globe—appearing on popular TV shows, recording with famous musicians, and performing at festivals like the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Concert with the Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Angelique Kidjo, and John Legend. One of the group’s songs was featured in the Disney Pixar film WALL-E. Through its earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, brilliant costumes, and winning spirit, the Soweto Gospel Choir truly uplifts the soul.

“Hope—It’s Been a Long Time Coming”

With its rich vocal textures and driving rhythms, the charismatic Soweto Gospel Choir returns to Beaches Fine Arts Series with a special program celebrating South African and American artists associated with the struggle for civil rights and social justice. This inspiring concert features South African freedom songs that inspired the Rainbow Nation, and heartfelt renditions of the music of the civil rights movement with works by Billie Holiday, James Brown, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, and Mahalia Jackson, in addition to traditional African gospel music and spirituals.
