Inspiration for piece:

Painting with 1000’s of dots allows me to paint the person from the inside out.  Unbeknownst to me I finished the painting of Cosmic Kahlo on Frida‘s birthday on July 6, 2021.The inner portion between the face represents the cosmic galaxy.

I visited a photography exhibit at the Salvador Dali Museum in Saint Petersburg that displayed photographs of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera‘s life together. The photo that stuck out most to me was after her accident she still laid in bed and painted despite her immense pain.

Frida had been injured in a horrific bus accident. An iron handrail had impaled her through her pelvis. The removal of the handrail caused Kahlo immense pain. Kahlo’s pelvic bone had been fractured and the rail had punctured her abdomen and uterus. Her spine had been broken in three places, her right leg in 11 places, her shoulder was dislocated, her collarbone was broken, and doctors later discovered that three additional vertebrae had been broken as well.

Kahlo remained in the hospital for a month, and then bed-ridden for several months at home. Her injuries forced her to abandon the idea of school. She turned to painting by using a specially-made lap easel that allowed her to paint from bed. Already introspective, she became her first subject matter, using an overhead mirror in her bed to begin painting the first in a long series of self-portraits.

Frida’s tenacity, courage, creativity and bravery continues to inspire me in my everyday artistic journey.

Pain can sometimes feel cosmic and out of this world at times. Artists like myself and Frida are able to take that ache and affliction and turn it into beautifully painted masterpieces.

Frida Kahlo Quote:

“Pain, pleasure and death are no more than a process for existence. The revolutionary struggle in this process is a doorway open to intelligence.”
