The Artist
Fine art photographer and published author Mary Atwood is a long-time resident of the First Coast area, whose deep appreciation of its natural beauty, rich history, and diverse culture is often reflected in her work.
Mary’s fine art photography is included in numerous public, private and corporate collections in the United States and France. PNC Bank has acquired more than twenty of her images for their corporate collection.
Mary’s photographs have been exhibited in galleries, museums and public art venues, with more than twenty-five solo exhibitions. To date, her works have won more than fifty awards in local, regional and national juried exhibitions.
Mary was the recipient of the prestigious Art Ventures grant in 2011, and has done commissioned work for MOCA Jacksonville.
Most notably, Mary was selected by the Sister Cities organization of Nantes, France, to exhibit her “First Coast Reflections” project as part of the inaugural celebration for “la Maison des Etates-Unis” (the American House) during the summer of 2013.
Her quest to capture the intimate side of North Florida’s history led to the publication of her book Historic Homes of Florida’s First Coast by The History Press of Charleston, South Carolina.
Historic Homes of Florida’s First Coast was awarded First Prize for Adult Non-Fiction by the Florida State Chapter of the National League of American Pen Women.
Historic Homes of Florida’s First Coast is available on Amazon.
Artist Statement
A good photograph has the ability to speak a silent language,
yet still leaves much for the viewer to interpret.
I see my camera as an extension of not only my eyes but also of my heart.
My artwork serves as my silent voice.
The pieces I create allow me to speak of my world without the use of words.
The artwork I create is my attempt to express “my vision” – a visual manifestation of lessons learned from what I see in the world around me.
I believe there is a significant difference between looking and seeing; looking is an instinctive act, while truly “seeing” is much more of a skill. I also believe that every person “sees” things from a unique perspective, which is influenced by their own life experiences.
My challenge as a photographer is to see, but my challenge as an artist lies in creating works which give the viewer an opportunity to share what I see.
Much of my work has a personal story attached to it. I am sometimes able to put that story into a single word – a “visual verb” which describes what I am hoping to express with that particular image. Frequent topics for my work would include love, family, nature, and spirituality.

In addition to its outstanding concerts and educational outreach programs, BFAS also presents an art exhibition from a regional visual artist at each home concert.
Works are showcased at the concert and at the reception following each concert. Concert attendees are able to meet the artists at the reception. The exhibition remains in place for several weeks and works are available for purchase.
