Artist Statement
As technology advances and our society becomes increasingly digital, we lose touch with the industries that create products essential in our everyday lives. Focusing on the overlooked and hidden corners that many pass by, my paintings juxtapose resilience and decay. I seek to highlight the accomplishment, identity and intrinsic value found in honest work.
My inspiration is drawn from the people and buildings of our 97-year-old family business, Montgomery Industries, located in the historic Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville, FL.
Artist Bio
Dawn Inglis Montgomery was raised in Winter Park, FL in a home surrounded by art. Her mother had degrees in graphic art and interior design, and there were several looms and a photography lab in the house. In high school she studied at the Crealdé School of Art and with Barbara Bassett, who trained at the Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design.
Montgomery took drawing and painting courses while studying architecture and city planning at the University of Virginia. Completing her master’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology she worked for seven years in the city planning field. Influenced by this background, she is drawn to the angles and planes, and the contrast between resilience and decay, found in the urban and natural landscape.
Her award-winning paintings have been shown at ArtFields, the Jacksonville International Airport, the LaGrange Art Museum, the JaxChamber, and in galleries throughout northeast Florida.
