Formed in Havana in August 2015, The Habana Boys is a new choreographed-production comprised of four classically-trained tenors plus four musicians (Piano, Bass, Drums & Guitar – 8 performers).
The Habana Boys is comprised of tenors Ian Sanchez Guerra, Rey Reyes Bravo, Yunior Luis Perez Valdez, and Giraldo Carmenate Izaguirre. Most often they appear in concert with their Musical Director, Hector Manuel Quintana Ferreiro on guitar, plus three additional musicians, on piano, bass and drums.
Ian Sanchez Guerra, 22, was born in Havana. Shortly after graduating with honors from the National Lyric Theater of Havana in 2013, Ian was awarded the top prize at the Ernesto Lecuona competition, sponsored by the Catalan Society, and made his debut at the National Theater of Cuba in a new musical Las Leandras. Ian has performed in Italian and French Operas and Zarzuelas throughout Cuba, Uruguay and Chile.
Rey Reyes Bravo, 22 was born in Guanajay, in the province of Artemisa, Cuba. Rey graduated from the National Lyric Theater of Havana in 2013 and while there won numerous prizes including the special and popularity prize at the Contest of “The New Voice,” and the prize for interpretation at the Ariguanabense Absente Contest. Rey has appeared in principal roles in Havana productions of The Magic Flute, La Traviata, Lucia de Lammermoor and in several Zarzuelas.
Yunior Luis Perez Valdez, 29, from Havana graduated from one of the top Arts Schools in Havana, majoring in artista plastico. Just three months after beginning formal vocal training at the ripened-age of 20, Yunior won first-prize in a competition of Mexican music for his interpretation of the Bolero. Another three months after this, he auditioned for the National Lyric Theater of Havana, where he was immediately accepted. It was here were he excelled in performing Cuban and Spanish Zarzuelas, and appeared in several major productions. In 2012, Yunior was asked to join Havana’s world famous Tropicana Club, where he remains today as a featured vocal soloist.
Giraldo Carmenate Izaguirre, 22, from Havana is a 2013 graduate of the school of the National Lyric Theatre of Cuba. Giraldo first appeared in a play on stage at the age of 8, but soon realized music was his true calling. He won his first prize at the age of 10 in a young singers competition, and both the Pioneer Festival Prize and the Terser Prize at the National Drama Festival by age 13. Giraldo has performed in productions of The Magic Flute, and La Boheme in Havana and like the other Habana Boys, has appeared on virtually every major TV show in Havana.
This will be their debut appearance at Beaches Fine Arts Series as they travel on their first North American tour.
